While Gramps cultivated friendships with many Black men, he’s not thrilled when his daughter Ann marries Barack’s father, who is Black. Gramps was incensed, for instance, when the furniture store where he worked asked him to only serve Mexican or Black customers after hours. Throughout their moves, they found themselves particularly disturbed by the racism they witnessed. As an idealistic person always looking for new horizons, Gramps took Toot to Texas, Seattle, and then to Hawaii. Because of this Toot’s parents immediately disliked Gramps when he started dating their daughter, which gave him a sense of the prejudice that some people face. He grew up near Wichita, Kansas, where his father was a known philanderer, and his mother committed suicide. This relationship is not possible based on lifespan dates.Gramps is Barack’s maternal grandfather, Ann’s father, and Toot’s husband. You have chosen this person to be their own family member.
